To continue with our exploration of Northland, we stayed two nights at a campground on Hihi Beach, in the little town of Hihi in Doubtless Bay. We were lucky to park on a peaceful spot high up on a hill that overlooked Doubtless Bay. It was a great place to soak in the beautiful views of the East coast. We were now on the South Pacific Ocean side and it felt more sheltered.

While we were admiring the sunset on the beach on our first night there, we started chitchatting with a lady walking her dog. She told us about a cove we could walk to at low tide that had a great swimming beach. We took her advice the next day and made our way there in the afternoon, starting on the main beach and walking along the shore and pass some rocks to reach it. It was well worth the effort as we found it to be the most idyllic little private beach. It was backed by a forested cliff and there were rocky outcroppings on either end. Pretty, gnarly trees provided some shade and a place to hang our towels. We had a great time swimming and relaxing there for a while.

By the time we were done, the tide had risen enough that we had to take a trail up the hill behind to get back to our campground. There were some pretty impressive homes on top of the cliff that had amazing views. It would be fun to live there!

We enjoyed the slower pace of our two days in Hihi taking time to relax, catching up on laundry, planning our future route and working on blog posts. And we made sure to catch the gorgeous sunset one more time before leaving Doubtless Bay.
